Chopped fiber materials such as SMC gives huge benefits in terms of cycle time and production volumes, whilst delivering a large proportion of the structural benefits of continuous fiber materials. The random nature of the material does however present challenges in terms of FEA performance prediction. Traditional methods often lead to very low allowable and hence overweight parts. Engenuity's recently developed FiRMA technology provides a solution to these issues—mapping material properties to the physical test results of a range of coupon geometries, and providing a statistical output for the strength of the component. The effect of design changes (geometry/thickness) can thus be easily assessed leading to development of efficient structure.
